In 2018 the Foundation has been active to promote environmental conservation and cooperation between the DPRK and the world, especially on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast Asia. HSF supported the accession of the DPRK to the ´Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance´, e.g. by organizing workshops, the participation in international events and by conducting research regarding the conservation of wetlands and bird species in Rason and other parts of the DPRK. Publications had the aim to raise awareness on environment conservation in the country and internationally.
As an acknowledgement of the work and the engagement on the Korean Peninsula with emphasis on transboundary issues regarding the subjects of afforestation and protection of migratory birds, HSF received the Environmental Award of the Tripartite Environmental Ministers Meeting from South Korea, China and Japan. Find out more about the Award here.
To secure a successful conservation of wetlands also in the future, the HSF signed a „Memorandum of Understanding“ with the Ramsar Regional Center – East Asia and Suncheon City to vitalize inter-Korean ecological exchanges.
In addition, over the last years HSF supported the accession of the DPRK to the East Asian-Australasian Flyway Partnership concerned with the issue of migratory bird protection along the flyway for migratory birds with the aim to further strengthening the potential for trust-building with other countries in the region.
The year ended with the UN World Climate Conference in Katowice, Poland, where HSF took part and supported the participation of a delegation from North Korea. Find out more about the World Climate Conference here.
