Scaly-sided Mergansers in Yeoncheon

The Korea office of Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSF) has been supporting the organization "BirdsKorea Yeoncheon" throughout the last year. The organization mainly focuses on the Scaly-sided Mergansers (SSM), a bird species from the duck family. The main activity of BirdsKorea Yeoncheon's  program is monitoring them and research on their winter habitat in the Yeoncheon region. In this work, it is particularly important to protect the breeding and resting sites, as this creates the basis for their way of life. As Yeoncheon is a border area between North and South Korea, monitoring the area is not only important for the protection of migratory birds, but also for the aspect of "green détente", the free development of nature.

The interim report, which documents the collaboration of the HSF Korea Office in the project "Winter Census of Scaly-sided Merganser in FNS", contains more details on the species conservation of BirdsKorea Yeoncheon.
