HSF in Yeoncheon: Symposium on Birds, Biodiversity, and the Unique Habitat of Scaly-sided Mergansers

The International Symposium for the Conservation of Scaly-sided Mergansers took place in Yeoncheon from November 21 to 22, 2023. Experts exchanged insights on the best methods and the significance of international collaboration for bird conservation, and guided participants through captivating excursions into the habitats of these birds.

On November 21st, 2023, the International Symposium for the Conservation of Scaly-sided Mergansers was held in Yeoncheon, bringing together experts from NGOs, government bodies, and international organizations. The event centered on discussions of the importance of international collaboration for bird conservation, methods, and strategies for biodiversity preservation amid the challenges of the climate crisis. The serene reflection of Scaly-sided Mergansers on the water's surface served as a powerful metaphor during the symposium, symbolizing the fragility of our environment. The ripple effect of this reflection represents the urgent need for conservation work along the flyway. In addition, HSF was pleased and honored to meet the famous Korean YouTuber, Korean Birder, who is known for his remarkable work in the field of birdwatching.

On November 22th, attendees explored areas such as the Imjin River Jusangjeolli area, the Gunnam Dam area (recognized as a Geosite, Biosphere Reserve, and a planned Flyway Network Site), and Hantan River. The immersive experience allowed the participants to witness the beauty of Scaly-sided Mergansers and Red-crowned Cranes in their natural habitats. Dr. Nial Moores, Director of Birds Korea, highlighted the unique landscape of the Gunnam Dam area, where both bird species coexist. He encouraged attendees to contemplate ideas for habitat restoration, underlining the importance of preserving these environments.

Last year, HSF published a publication in collaboration with Birds Korea specifically on the Scaly-sided Merganser. For further information, click here.

HSF expresses gratitude to all organizers, especially the city of Yeoncheon, EAAFP, and Birds Korea, for organizing this impactful event. Their dedication and collaborative efforts contribute substantially to the protection of these birds and their habitat.
