World Wildlife Day 2024

On March 3rd, “World Wildlife Day" is celebrated globally to commemorate the signing of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) on March 3rd, 1973. The agreement aims to protect threatened wild animals and plants from international trade

This year's theme for 2024 is: "Connection People and Planet: Exploring Digital Innovation in Wildlife Conservation." For World Wildlife Day (WWD2024), the goal is to examine and demonstrate how digital technologies and services can contribute to conservation efforts by promoting wildlife protection, sustainable and legal trade in wild animals, and harmonious coexistence between humans and animals in an increasingly interconnected world.

WWD2024 serves as a platform for intergenerational exchange and the empowerment of youth through art, presentations, and discussions about the opportunities that await us in digital conservation for a sustainable future together. March 3rd thus serves as a starting point to explore the digital innovations currently available, identify intersectional disparities, and contemplate how we can make our digital connectivity accessible to all people and further develop the planet.

The HSF Korea is primarily involved in regional development and cooperation in environmental issues in the Korean border region (DMZ). In this context, on May 28, 2021, the HSS organized a seminar in collaboration with the Seoul National University Conservation Genome Resource Bank for Korean Wildlife on the topic of "Current State of Research on the Conservation of North Korean Wildlife." This seminar provided South Korean researchers and experts with the opportunity to learn about the latest developments and challenges in the field of North Korean wildlife conservation.

Furthermore, from February 11th to 17th, 2024, the HSF participated in the CMS COP14 in Uzbekistan, where it advocated for the protection of migrating animals and their habitats. The work of HSF was solidified with the decision to include Dr. Seliger, the representative of HSF-Korea, and Dr. Choi, Senior researcher, as members of the Flyway Working Group of the CMS, ensuring future collaboration with CMS.
