Workshop on the unification education for school teachers

A workshop on the unification education for school teachers took place on August 19th 2016 from 13:30 to 18:00 O’clock in Daejeon. The workshop was organized by IPA (Institute for Peace Affairs) and sponsored by Hanns Seidel Foundation Seoul Office. The title of the workshop was “New paradigm of the unification education”.

Prof. Kim, Hyung-Tae (Former president of Hannam University in Daejeon) held a keynote speech. He said in his keynote speech that we need to satisfy not only domestic conditions but also diplomatic requirements for the upcoming Korean unification. In addition we have to keep ourselves strong und harmonized. That should be the best preparation for the unification. After the keynote speech we had three presenters: Prof. Hwang, In-Pyo (Chuncheon National University of Education), Ms. Kim, Hae-Kyung (Bukdong Middle School in Daegu) and Mr. Lee, Hyung-Woo (Hwahong Middle School in Suwon). Prof. Hwang criticized in his presentation that the unification education of South Korea has been too strongly operated by the government. We need more motivations and initiatives by the private sector and the political education should be largely activated. Sustainability is a key factor for the success of the unification education. Beside the unification education we need to undertake the political education, the education on the multiculturalism, the peace education and the education on the human rights.

During the debate-session after the presentations 15 additional teachers from all over the country took part in the discussion and exchanged their opinions and experiences. All participants agreed that the workshop was very fruitful and were looking forward to continuing the workshop as a good and regular opportunity for exchanging information and experiences.
