What To Do With the Resources at the China-Korea Border?

The 7th Changbai Mountain Forum, held from 24th to 26th August 2018, focused on the conservation, sustainable use and development of biological resources in the border area between China and Korea, including Changbai Mountain and the Tumen River.

The 7th Changbai Mountain Forum was hosted by Key Laboratory of Natural Resources of Changbai Mountain & Functional Molecules, Ministry of Education, Yanbian University, China from 24th to 26th August 2018. At the same time the 2nd Forum on Conservation and Sustainable Management of Environment Ecology in the Northeast Asia was hosted by OJeong Eco-Resilience Institute of Korea University and Yanbian University. The forum theme was One Belt and One Road & Innovation Development. The forum carried out in-depth discussion on the protection, sustainable use and development of biological resources in China-Korea border area including Changbai Mountain and Tumen River.

Lecture on Land degradation and restoration.

Prof. Weihong Zhu, Yanbian University introduced research result in Tumen River area - Impacts of land cover changes on ecosystem carbon stocks over the transboundary Tumen River Basin in Northeast Asia. Prof. Toshiya Okuro, Tokyo University gave a special speech about the land restoration and sustainable use of ecosystem services in the Northeast Asia. Prof. Okuro specially mentioned the linkage between Human and Environment in drylands - Inner Mongolia. Prof. Raeik Jang, Korea University did presentation about the sustainable land environment creation – No Net Loss in Korea. He introduced the concept of ecological account system at national level. Prof. Youngkeun Song, Seoul National University explained the restoration of urban ecosystem proejcts - Urban Ecosystem Function Estimated from the 3D structure of Green Spaces at Multiple Spatial and Temporal Scales. Dr Hyun-Ah Choi, senior researcher at Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSF) Korea, also attended the forum and did presentation about the HSF’ work and international cooperation to support the DPRK’s forest restoration. Dr Choi explained the DPRK’s environment projects supported by HSF and international organizations in the field of forestry, biodiversity, and wetland. Dr Choi moderated in the student competition section. The participants shared their research outcomes and discussed future cooperation during the forum.

After the forum Dr Choi had a meeting with Prof. Ying Nan and Prof. Guishan Cui from Yanbian University to discuss biodiversity conservation in the border area on 27 August 2018.
