Water Resources and Forest Management in the Border Area

HSK Korea held important meetings with various institutions in early March. North Korean sustainable development, watershed management plan in the border area, and inter-Korean forest cooperation were the key topics discussed.

Meeting in the National Assembly

On March 10, Dr. Bernhard Seliger and Kim Young-Soo of Hanns Seidel Foundation Korea had a working meeting with Lee Sangmin, Member of the National Assembly (Daejeon, DP), and General-Director Chung Keeyoung of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Lee Sangmin is chairman of the Korean-German friendship group in the National Assembly and member of the Committee of Foreign Affairs and Unification. General-Director Chung heads the Climate Change, Energy, Environmental and Scientific Affairs Bureau at MOFA. They discussed challenges in sustainable development in North Korea and ways for better cooperation.

Meeting with K-Water

HSF Korea has been actively working with K-Water related to water resources. On 9 March 2021 Mr. Jo Young Sik, General Director of Water resources management Research and Planning Department, K-Water and his colleague visited to HSF Korea to share the current water management plan on the Korean Peninsula. Dr Bernhard Seliger, Representative of HSF Korea mentioned the needs of watershed management plan in border area including his current visit to the border area.

Meeting with Korea Forest Service

Korea Forest Service (KFS) has the overall responsibility for establishment and implementation of forest policies and laws on the Korean Peninsula. KFS manages the Inter-Korean Forest Cooperation in accordance with the agreements of Inter-Korean High-Level Talks to carry out the Panmunjeom Declaration from 2018. HSF Korea and KFS also have been working together since 2012 for forest management on the Korean Peninsula. Especially, HSF Korea supported international knowledge exchange including experts from the Korean Peninsula in the field of forestry. On 9 March 2021 Dr. Lee Yong-Kwon (Director of Inter-Korean Forest Cooperation Division, KFS), Mr. Kim Nam-Ho (Deputy Director) and Dr. Jung Chan Sik (Senior researcher) visited HSF Korea to discuss future cooperation. Dr Bernhard Seliger (Representative of HSF Korea) explained current HSF Korea’s work on the Korean Peninsula and shared his ideas for the next step. Dr. Lee and Dr. Seliger agreed to carry out more practical activities.
