Meeting
Afforestation in the Inner-Korean Border Area

The forest fires of the past two years in the inner-Korean border area had devastating effects on nature. The divided county of Goseong, partner county of Hanns Seidel Foundation in Korea (HSF) since 2005, was particularly affected. HSF, which has been supporting reforestation especially in North Korea for many years, will help with a model reforestation of a mixed forest in the area dominated by pine forests. On this occasion they visited the district in mid-May and congratulated the District Administrator Ham, who took office in a by-election at the same time as the election of the National Assembly.

Goseong County in Gangwon Province and HSF Korea are partners for the sustainable development of the inner-Korean border area since 2005. During this time they have carried out many projects in the environmental sector and intend to continue this partnership in the future. In order to maintain the strengthened friendship and cooperation, Dr. Bernhard Seliger, representative of Hans Seidel Foundation in Korea (HSF), met Mr. Ham Myeong-Jun, the newly elected district administrator of Goseongs County, to congratulate him personally on his assumption of office, to present the function and work of HSF Korea and to discuss possible cooperation with North Korea in form of projects or seminars.

Afterwards a meeting with Mr. An Jae-Pil from the Goseong County Forestry Department followed to make final decisions regarding the upcoming reforestation project. HSF will plant an area in the south of the county with a mixed forest of red pine, Korean pine, Mongolian oak and sweet chestnut from May 2020.

Furthermore, during the trip the organization of an exhibition on "30 years of German reunification" was discussed with Jeong Seong-Hun, Director of the DMZ Museum. The HSF and Gangwon DMZ Museum have been working together for a long time and the HSF has already helped to set up a permanent exhibition on the inner-German border.
