Catching a Glimpse of a Northern Wheatear

While making an excursion to the Siam Wetland and the near Yudo Islet in Han River Estuary Dr. Bernhard Seliger, Dr. Hyun-Ah Choi and Ms Denise Froemel of the Hanns Seidel Foundation as well as Ms Vivian Fu of the East Asian Australasian Flyway Partnership could catch a glimpse at peculiar bird species. Among those also surprisingly one being a Northern Wheatear.

Oenanthe oenanthe

The Northern Wheatear was sighted siting on the fence separating the nearby rice fields from Han River. Presumably he was bought over by the recent typhoon Lingling.

Other notable birds include a Curlew Sandpiper, at least 11 Chinese Pond Herons and more than 25 Mandarin Ducks, a number of other waders (Common Sandpiper, Wood Sandpiper, Terek Sandpiper, Red-necked Stints, Common Greenshank) and 17 Black-faced Spoonbills of which three were in fact on DPRK territory, opposite of Yudo Islet.

Satellite tags indicate that the birds frequently cross the Han River roost and forage
