Shorebird Information Guide

The Hanns Seidel Foundation Korea has supported the publication of a new information booklet in North Korea, which is an identification guideline on shorebird species in the DPRK and on the East Asian - Australasian Flyway.

The booklet was published by the North Korean Ministry of Land and Environmental Protection, a long-time partner of the HSF Korea. The booklet gives a brief summary of the most important shorebird species in the country and acts as a guide for researches and students, who want to know more about the topic of domestic birds in the DPRK and how to identify those. The booklet also features, among other species, information and illustrations of the Spoon-billed Sandpiper and its’ precarious situation. The population of this bird species has decreased by nearly 90% in the last thirty years. Therefore, the Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) included it in the list of endangered species in 2008. The HSF Korea continues to support projects regarding the conservation of endangered bird species such as the Spoon-billed Sandpiper.

This booklet helps to identify those species when conducting bird surveys or just going out for bird watching. After identifying the species and its’ population more effective measures of protection can be taken.

The editing and publishing of the booklet was supported by the Hanns Seidel Foundation Korea, Birdlife Australia and the East Asian-Australasian Flyway Partnership. We hope that with such publications endangered species can be protected more effectively both domestically and along the East Asian - Australasian Flyway.
