Sustainable Development Goals Forum in Vladivostok, Russia

During the multi-stakeholder Forum that was held on the 15th and 15th of October 2019 by the North East Asian Nations about Sustainable Development Goals, representatives of each nation talked about their country's goals and challenges concerning sustainable development options for the future.

The North-East Asia Multi-stakeholder Forum on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) was held in Vladivostok, Russian Federation from 15th to 16th October 2019 to provide opportunity sharing sub-regional perspectives and review of progress related to implementing the 2030 Agenda for SDGs.

 Dr Hyun-Ah Choi, Senior researcher of HSF Korea attended the Forum as invited participant.

The first day, country representatives in East and North-East Asia such as DPR and RO Korea, Japan, Mongolia, China, Russia shared the progress and challenges in the implementation of SDGs at national level. China has green development for the 2030 Agenda to promote low-carbon development in key area and it is related to climate change action. DPRK established the National SDGs related to Voluntary National Review (VNR) in March 2019. DPRK will share the report in 2020. Japan also had established SDG Action Plan 2019 and decided the expanded SDGs Action Plan 2019 in June 2019. ROK had established K-SDG in 2018 to build inclusive state based on supporting across all dimensions of society. Mongolia submitted the VNR – sustainable development vision 2030 in 2019. Russia had signed the Paris Agreement in 2019 and will submit the VNR in 2020.

After the country representatives’ presentation Civil Society Organization (CSO) of each country gave the process with government for implementing SDGs. The CSO works under the trust with the count-partner of government and sets the implementation principles following the original SDGs.

The second day, Russian government agencies shared the process and preparation of VNR. Russia will be presenting the report at next High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development in 2020. Russia government launched the interdepartmental working group (IWG) on climate change and sustainable development under the Presidential Executive office to implement SDGs. The IWG works with Federal State Statistics Service, expert group for information and statistical support to SDGs monitoring. Russia has available data for SDGs except climate action, related to SDG 13. They used global indicator as guideline. Russia government also published the informational statistical pocketbook “Russia’ 2018” including section on SDGs and the first regional report on SDGs. After Russian government presentation, the representative of CSO, Russia did presentation related to school lunch (feeding) programmed for kids. It is related to the development of state and economy – especially, implantation of SDG 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, and 9.

To implement the 2030 Agenda for SDGs it needs to cooperate and engage the people from government, academia, civil society, private sector and international community. The participants agreed the process and transformation towards sustainable and resilient societies. It’s also related to action with next generation.
