Excursion
The European Union and the Korean Peninsula

On the 18th and 19th of February 2020 the representative of the Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSF) in Korea Dr. Bernhard Seliger visited the Brussels Office of HSF to discuss with representatives of EU institutions and experts about the EU policy in relation to North Korea.

On this occasion he met representatives of the European Commission, the chief Directorate-General DevCo who coordinate humanitarian work in North Korea, representatives of the European External Action Service, the European Parliament, think tanks and universities. In a conversation with MEP Markus Ferber, chairman of the Hanns Seidel Foundation, who is a member of the European Parliament for the Korean Peninsula as well, the development and direction of the projects in Korea were discussed.

In the Europe Office of the HSF in Brussels Seliger held a presentation on the current situation in North Korea and the project work of HSF Korea on the Korean peninsula. The media coverage on North Korea is often sensational and patchy, with content limitations on security threats coming from the isolated country. But little is known about the everyday life of the population, the impact of the sanctions on the economy, and the opportunities for cooperation with international actors. Here, he gave an insight into his impressions and experiences of North Korea and the inner-Korean process of reconciliation.

The newly elected chairman of the delegation of the European Parliament for the Korean Peninsula, Lukas Mandl MEP (EVP/ ÖVP) invited Dr. Seliger to participate in a conversation on the current situation in Korea in a podcast that can be listened to below.
