The field trip consisted of visiting Hongcheon Eco-friendly Energy Town and Seonam solar power plant. Each of the venues are using renewable energy such as biogas and solar power for energy production. Many experts in various organizations that are working for North Korea aid attended this field trip.
Hongcheon Eco-friendly Energy Town was a new approach to solve NIMBY phenomenon of unwanted facilities such as as sewage and livestock night soil treatment plants by linking them with renewable energy production and returning its economic profit to the local residents.
Seonam power plant is a facility which solar panels are installed over Seonam Sewage Treatment Facility. This facility shows the way of building solar panels in big cities such as Seoul.
Researcher Hyun Tae Lee from Hanns Seidel Foundation Korea also attended this field trip along with the experts. It was an opportunity to think about the ways to help North Korea based on renewable energy. Especially, many experts thought that the case of Hongcheon Eco-friendly Energy Town can be applicable for North Korea to produce energy with biogas.
