The conference had the objective to bring leading climatologists, meteorologists, marine biologists, oceanographer, ecologists, and environmental researchers together to exchange and share their experiences and research results regarding every aspect of climate change and global warming. In 2018 the conference focused on a variety of advanced research topics including climate change and climatology, evidence and solutions for climate change, as well as global warming causes and effects. This year's 5th World Conference on Climate Change was jointly taking place with the 16th Annual Meeting on Environmental Toxicology and Biological systems.

Presentation on HSF's work for the environment and DPRK

HSS

Dr. Hyun-Ah Choi, Senior Researcher of the Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSF) Korea attended as a speaker the 5th World Conference on Climate Change. On October 5th Dr. Choi introduced HSF’s work, which is connected to climate change as well as environmental projects in DPRK. In addition, she explained the approaches of international cooperation with the aim to restore the degraded land and environment in DPRK.

Dr. Gascard's presentation on the decline of Arctic sea ice

The speakers shared their opinions and research results with the goal to reduce the impact of climate change and of a carbon negative society or a fossil fuel free society during the conference. Especially, Ms Lopez (Director of Pan-American Observatory of Landscape, Territory and Architecture, OPPTA) explained the urban architectural approaches for an adaptation of effective climate change in Latin America. Throughout the priority action plan, OPPTA collected and implemented research proposals. It was applied the concept of the little community, which improves the conditions of the communities as well as includes potential analysis of the sea level rise. Dr Gascard (French National Center for Scientific Research) explained the decline in Arctic sea ice over the 40 years (1979-2017) and the respective sea ice loss pattern. The Arctic sea ice loss, which adds up to 10.000 km3 in summer and winter, is mainly due to the lack of formed sea ice in winter and the increasing amount of ice melting in summer resulting in an imbalance. In addition, he mentioned that there is no clear answer for the reason of loss in sea ice. However, the main reason are already well-known – warm airstreams and warm oceanic waters. Ms Sara Alexander (Baylor University) did a presentation on the topic of political ecology of climate change – a steep learning curve for West Texas wheat farmers. In her presentation comments by wheat farmers were introduced stating how they perceived the climate risk concerning the growth of wheat and how they reacted to the communication of predictive information in light of their sense of place and self.
