Terrestrial Assemblage

The outdoor exhibition, Terrestrial Assemblage will be starting from May 6th online and offline at the Floating University Berlin. The exhibition is accompanied by a symposium entitled ‘Terrestrial Assemblage: Ecological Thinking in Border Zones’. Hanns Seidel Foundation is participating and supporting the symposium as a partner organization.

In the age of geo-social issues, where climate, inequality and migration are interrelated and humanity threatens to become homeless, facing a potentially uninhabitable earth in the future, paradoxically more and more enclosed and demarcated territories are emerging worldwide. Geopolitical and economic upheavals and changes in climate living conditions create new borders. In this age of global pandemics, the border seems to have become not just an instrument of intensive surveillance, but a geo-political power. The desire for the “vetted” and “sanctioned” migrant is shared across species lines. It is ironic that the ecosystems in the respective regions benefit from these border regimes, while at the same time challenging them. Border areas are refuges for rare or endangered plants and animals and have unique species richness. Terrestrial Assemblage brings artists together whose practice deals with the relationship of humans to the earth. They address Anthropocene/ Capitolocene as a cause of the new borders, and tried to analyze social, biological and political border shifts through their artistic observations. Terrestrial Assemblage aims to be projection surface and a space of experience for artistic fantasies beyond political and geographical borders.

The exhibition will start form May 7th and lasts until June 6th, and it is accompanied by a symposium entitled ‘Terrestrial Assemblage: Ecological Thinking in Border Zones,’ where artists and scientists will present their interdisciplinary projects on the environment in border zones. Berlin Senate for Culture and Europe, Korean Cultural Center Berlin, the Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz Deutschland e.V. (BUND), and Hanns Seidel Foundation Korea support this event. Experts of “Grünes Band” in Germany, European Green Belt, and institutions related to the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) in Korea will join and share their academic knowledge and opinion. HSF Korea was originally arranging the participation from both Koreas at the symposium. However, due to the COVID 19 Pandemic, the symposium turned into an online.

The opening day is 6th May 2021 from 4-9 pm, and the exhibition lasts until 6th June. The symposium will be held on 18th May 2021 from 10 am – 6pm. You can participate in this event here via an online.
