South Korea and Fine Dust

On April 25th, the citizen policy forum about the sustainability of national agency for solving fine dust problem was held by Institute for Climate Change Action.

Chan-Soo Kang, a journalist from Joong-Ang Daily, explained the background about the establishment of the agency, what it should do for solving fine dust problem and the sustainability of the agency. Journalist Kang explained that the establishment of the agency was first proposed by Son Hak-Kyu, chairman of Bareun Mirae party, on this year March and Son recommended Ban Ki Moon, former UN Secretary General, to lead the agency. President Moon accepted the proposal on March 12th and Ban also accepted the offer to be a chief of the agency on March 17th. The agency is expected to be established on April 29th.

Researcher Hyun Tae Lee from Hanns Seidel Foundation Korea attended the forum as a citizen participant. There was a debate about the national agency for fine dust solution among the experts from various institutes. They expressed that the agency should exist regardless of government transformation. They also claimed that the agency should provide solutions based on the accurate information of current fine dust situation in South Korea.
