Special Lecture at The State University of New York in Songdo

In March, HSF representative Dr. Seliger held a special lecture at The State University of New York’s Korea Campus in Songdo. In the lecture, he introduced the foundation’s work in Korea and answered students’ questions after his presentation.

On March 22, Hanns Seidel Foundation representative Dr. Bernhard Seliger gave a special lecture at The State University of New York in which he presented HSF’s work on the Korean peninsula in the areas of biodiversity and environmental protection.

The presentation kicked off with an overview of HSF’s work on wetlands. Dr. Seliger introduced important flyways of migratory birds, the East Asian-Australasian flyway in particular, and highlighted North Korea’s crucial role as a stopover place in bird migration.

He continued by presenting Clean Development Mechanism-projects (CDM) conducted in the DPRK. These include an energy project where HSF helped North Korea construct and register several environmentally friendly power plants and a biogas project through which local families gained access to biogas digesters.

The lecture continued with an overview of problems such as deforestation, followed by the presentation of an EU-funded project which HSF has conducted in the DPRK. Thanks to this project, books on forestation have been published and experts could travel to North Korea to share their knowledge. In addition, a tree nursery has been established. After the lecture, Dr. Seliger answered questions asked by interested students.
