“SLUT UP Korea” Unification Monument Unveiling Ceremony

On August 15, an unveiling ceremony for Unification Monument was held at Unification Village in Paju. This event was organized by Korean Institute for Peace and Cooperation and supported by Hanns Seidel Foundation Korea. Through this, participants will have an opportunity aspiring the unification of South and North Korea on National Liberation Day every year.

The “SLUT UP Korea” event, which was held on National Liberation Day (Gwangbokjeol) to commemorate independence from Japan on the Korean Peninsula, started from Gwanghwamun and held the unveiling ceremony at the Unification Village in Paju. Before departing from Gwanghwamun, former Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn visited and delivered words of encouragement and support. Participants of the event sang the Korean national anthem, a silent tribute to patriotic martyrdom, and sang the song “Our Wish is Unification” in front of the “SLUT UP Korea” monument. After this, they add one more barbed wire carved to commemorate the 76th anniversary of the division. Son Ki-Woong, the president of the KIPCO said “August 15 should be a day when we are ashamed of the division and are determined to achieve unification, not a day of celebration.”

The “SLUT UP Korea” monument was inspired by the “SLUT UP getrennt” monument in Luebeck, north of the German border. “SLUT UP” is a dialect in northern Germany that means “open.” In Paju Unification Village, “SLUT UP Korea” monument is erected toward the north, meaning North Korea should open its border just like South Korea. On August 15 of every year, the unification ceremony will be held to mark the barbed wire carved on the backside of the monument, not forgetting the pain of the division.
