“Seeking Sustainable Unification Policy and Northeast Asia in Flux” – KINU celebrates its 26th Anniversary

The Korean Institute for National Unification (KINU) hosted the KINU International Conference on “Seeking Sustainable Unification Policy and Northeast Asia in Flux” to celebrated its 26th anniversary. Therefore, KINU invited a large number of high-level administration representatives as well as international scientists from South Korea, Russia, Japan, China, the US and Germany. Dr. Seliger from Hanns Seidel Foundation Korea participated in the second panel to illustrate Germany´s perspective concerning low-key measures for a policy of détente towards North Korea.

The Hanns Seidel Foundation warmly congratulates the new president of the KINU, Dr. Son Gi-Woong (4th, lower left corner), and the KINU for their 26th anniversary. We are looking forward to a successful cooperation in the future!

The majority of participants at the panels agreed that the upcoming administration’s policytowards North Korea must be put under a more comprehensive umbrella for unification.  In recent years, policies have lacked consistency and sustainability. For that reason, there is a greater need for harmony between Unification Policy and North Korea Policy in order to build a long-term macro-level policy that is independent of the respective current government.

“Whatever the policy objective is, it should be connected to unification policy!”, Dr. Son Gi-Woong, the President of the KINU, stated. Former Minister of Unification, Lee Jong-seok, emphasized the importance of bringing the military conflict to an end. The answer to the Korean question should be more dialogue and a revised sanction policy. The following administration has to be in care of unification diplomacy, it needs to talk to the Kim regime and treat North Korea as a partner. South Korea also should induce support from other nations to build a stronger network.

“We should develop a knowledge-based society on the positive example of Europe. We should create a bigger goal and maintain peacekeeping, peacebuilding, peacemaking!”, emphasized Prof. Philo Kim from the Institute for Peace and Unification Studies at Seoul National University.
