The majority of participants at the panels agreed that the upcoming administration’s policytowards North Korea must be put under a more comprehensive umbrella for unification. In recent years, policies have lacked consistency and sustainability. For that reason, there is a greater need for harmony between Unification Policy and North Korea Policy in order to build a long-term macro-level policy that is independent of the respective current government.
“Whatever the policy objective is, it should be connected to unification policy!”, Dr. Son Gi-Woong, the President of the KINU, stated. Former Minister of Unification, Lee Jong-seok, emphasized the importance of bringing the military conflict to an end. The answer to the Korean question should be more dialogue and a revised sanction policy. The following administration has to be in care of unification diplomacy, it needs to talk to the Kim regime and treat North Korea as a partner. South Korea also should induce support from other nations to build a stronger network.
“We should develop a knowledge-based society on the positive example of Europe. We should create a bigger goal and maintain peacekeeping, peacebuilding, peacemaking!”, emphasized Prof. Philo Kim from the Institute for Peace and Unification Studies at Seoul National University.
