ROK-EEC Diplomatic Ties: A Snapshot of History

Professor Adrien Carbonnet from KU Leuven recently examined the initiation of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Korea and the European Economic Community in the 1960s in a seminar held at the HUFS JMCE.

In a recent seminar led by Professor Adrien Carbonnet (KU Leuven, Belgium) at the Hankuk University of Foreign Studies - Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence, the origins of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Korea (ROK) and the European Economic Community (EEC) sixty years ago were explored. Addressing three key questions, the seminar clarified that ROK initiated diplomatic relations in 1963, primarily driven by the economic benefits anticipated through strengthened ties with the EEC.

Initiated by ROK in 1963 for economic gains, the EEC readily accepted the proposal due to existing relations with individual member states. Professor Carbonnet's insights highlighted the European perception of ROK as politically neutral in the 1960s, focusing predominantly on economic aspects.
