Recent Developments in Infrastructure in North Korea and Consequences for Korean Unification – Presentation at the CVF

The renewal of infrastructure is one of the most challenging tasks for the North Korean economy. The gradual transition to a market economy brought many changes to North Korea, but infrastructure renewal needs large-scale investment not available under the current political situation.

Presentation at the Construction Vision Forum in Seoul

In a presentation for the Construction Vision Forum, an association of practitioners and researchers of infrastructure development in Korea, Dr. Bernhard Seliger, representative of Hanns-Seidel-Foundation, reported on recent developments in infrastructure in North Korea and discussed potential consequences for Korean unification. While certain widely-reported prestige projects like the new airports of Pyongyang and Wonsan or the Mashikryong ski resort showcase the revival of the North Korean economy, comprehensive infrastructure development remains elusive under the current geopolitical situation.

It requires concerted efforts by North and South Korea, International Financial Institutions, and the wider international community, which only becomes possible after a peaceful resolution of the current standoff at the Peninsula. A timely discussion of these challenges can also help to develop a strategy of sustainable use of the environment and necessary protection of valuable resources and areas while developing infrastructure necessary for economic growth.
