Project evaluation – EU-funded project on sustainable reforestation

As part of a visit within the context of the EU-funded project for the improvement of rural living conditions through healthy forests in North Korea, Prof. Dr. Pierre Ibisch (College of Sustainable Development Eberswalde) conducted an evaluation of the project that has been ongoing since 2014.

Part of the program were also visits to all project sites, such as the model afforestation site in Sangso-ri and the central tree nursery in Pyongyang.

While the 4th International Seminar of the project was conducted, Prof. Dr Ibisch had the chance to meet participants of the event and of previously conducted study tours, trainings and seminars to learn about the project, its outcomes and challenges that arose during the implementation of the project. Part of the program were also visits to all project sites, such as the model afforestation site in Sangso-ri and the central tree nursery in Pyongyang, where the Hanns Seidel Foundation set up a training facility as part of the project.

One of the additional outcomes of the project was the contribution to the establishment of the website “Hwangumsan” in the North Korean intranet, a website that makes national and international articles, books and various data about forestry accessible for the forest administration in the whole country. The creation of this website is a major step to improve the interconnectivity of the North Korean forestry sector and thereby the forest management in North Korea.
