North Korea in the Pandemic - Humanitarian Crisis and Military Confrontation

North Korea has been considered as one of the most isolated countries in the world for a long time and this isolation has been increased due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

During an expert meeting on February 26, the relations between the EU and the Korean peninsula were discussed and questions on the current humanitarian situation in North Korea were answered. Hanns Seidel Foundation has always been committed to peaceful development on the Korean peninsula in its work. As part of the promotion of environmental protection and sustainable development, North Korean partners are integrated into international organizations and mechanisms are established to promote exchange and encounter.

Since January 2020, almost all traffic in and out of the country stopped. Only a few planes were still allowed to land, usually to take foreigners out of the country. The isolation to prevent the Corona virus from entering has further affected the country's economy - even trade with China has reduced dramatically. But since almost all foreigners, including the staff of the German embassy, have already left the country at the beginning of March 2020, there is hardly any reliable information about the actual situation on the ground. In January 2021, the government around leader Kim Jong-Un organized a large party congress in which the people were sworn in for further hardship, recentralization of the economy and armament. However, provocations such as missile tests have not been carried out on the occasion of the change of power in the USA.
