Flyway Networking in Uzbekistan

HSF Korea researcher Dr. Hyunah Choi and project coordinator Minjae Baek met local experts to improve multilateral cooperation in the conservation of the Central Asian flyway during a trip to Uzbekistan.

From November 12-19, HSF researcher Dr. Hyunah Choi and Project Coordinator Minjae Baek conducted a networking visit to Uzbekistan to meet with local experts for the enhancement of multilateral cooperation and to prepare for the Convention on Migratory Species Fourteenth Meeting of the Conference of the Parties, set to take place in February 2024.

 

Dr. Choi and Ms. Baek met with local experts from the governmental sector, international non-government organizations (INGOs), and NGOs to discuss environmental issues in Uzbekistan and the activities of HSF Korea concerning climate, environmental protection, and the Central Asian Flyway.

 

The HSF Korea delegation met with UNDP Uzbekistan, HSF Central Asia, HSF Uzbekistan, GIZ, the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change, the Institute of Zoology Uzbekistan, the Uzbekistan society for the protection of birds (UzSPB), and the Association of Korean Cultural Centers of the Republic of Uzbekistan. Dr. Choi also held a lecture on RO Korea's Green economy and how to target young people for green policy at the Academy of Public Administration on 14 November 2023.

 

Together with the local experts from the Institute of Zoology Uzbekistan, the delegation conducted bird surveys during a field trip to the Tuzkan/Aydar Lake from 15th to 17th of November. The Lake was designated as an Important Birds and Biodiversity Area in 2008. The delegation recorded over 35 species, including Tundra Swan, Mute Swan, and Black-bellied Sandgrouse. They also briefly met with the Chief of local rangers under the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change to exchange information.

The Hanns Seidel Foundation's Climate Project aims to conserve migratory birds and habitats along the Central Asian Flyway for the protection of biodiversity as well as the adaption and mitigation of the climate crisis.
