[MIDAS] Benchmarking Korea

Dr. Seliger’s most recently published article in the Midas magazine, entitled “Benchmarking Korea”, encompasses an analysis of South Korea’s surge in modernization. In the article, he argues that benchmarking remains one of the significant factors that led to Korea’s rapid technological and socio-political advancements.

Hanns Seidel Foundation’s Korean representative, Dr. Bernhard Seliger, released an article entitled “Benchmarking Korea” to the Korean current affairs Magazine Midas in June. Midas magazine is a current affairs magazine that deals with various fields such as macroeconomics, business, people, and culture, including Korean Peninsula and international news content.

Dr. Seliger’s newest article discusses Korea’s quick modernization and its progression as an international actor. Dr. Seliger goes on to explain, that benchmarking, was one of the most important means for Korea to apply myriads of strategies inspired from pre-existing companies and even historic events, among them German Unification, in order to quickly grow into its respected position in the international community today. Korea itself has now become the “benchmarkee” among other Asian states.

However, the article also emphasizes that oftentimes, Korea’s swift success is attributed to viral cultural sensations such as K-pop, K-dramas, alongside K-food- especially by younger generations- when in reality, one must consider that Korea’s entire political, cultural, and economic trifecta is responsible. Dr. Seliger highlights the role that Korea’s government under Yoon Seok-Yeol plays; stating that it allows for Korean foreign policy to revolve less around the DPRK, and more about the peninsula’s role as an international actor. Ultimately, Dr. Seliger reminds the audience that Korea must continue to stick to its strategic strengths to benefit the larger population.
