Meetings
Meetings in January

In January 2021 alone, HSF Korea had multiple valuable exchanges and shared opinions and knowledge with fellow colleagues. Members of HSF Korea welcomed the visits from Professor Lee, Dr. Edge, and Ms. Kim.

Visit from Prof. Moosung Lee of Myongji University

Prof. Moosung Lee of Myongji University, currently President of the Korean Society for Contemporary European Studies (KSCES), came to the HSF office and discussed cooperation concerning the EU-Korea strategic partnership on January 11th. In particular, Dr. Bernhard Seliger, resident representative of HSF Korea, and Prof. Lee shared opinions on the role of the European Union on the Korean Peninsula.

While not being involved directly in denuclearization talks, the EU has been a long-term actor on the Korean Peninsula. For more than ten years, a strategic partnership is linking the EU and South Korea. And since the famine of the mid-1990s, the EU has become an important humanitarian actor in North Korea, while actively supporting improved human rights at the same time. Issues such as whether the EU can become a more visible actor on the Peninsula and what potential role can it have in the future will be at the core of the partnership of both sides, KSCES and HSF Korea.

Meeting with Dr. Lonnie Edge

On January 13th, HSF Korea welcomed Dr. Lonnie Edge, Managing Editor of the North Korean Review, the first academic English-language journal of North Korean issues. Established in 2005, The North Korean Review, now in its 17th volume, has been a valuable source of North Korea-related academic debate since a long time. It was established by Prof. Suk-hi Kim of University of Detroit-Mercy with the aim to provide readers with an improved understanding of the country’s complexities and the impact it has on global stability. Today, it is published by the Yonsei University Institute for North Korean Studies. Dr. Bernhard Seliger is Book Review Editor of the North Korean Review. A blog maintained by North Korean Review offers policy comments. Dr. Edge and Dr. Seliger discussed cooperation for the upcoming year.

Meeting with Curator Keum hwa Kim and "DAS DRITTE LAND"

Dr. Bernhard Seliger and Felix Glenk, project manager of HSF Korea, hosted a meeting with Art Curator Keum hwa Kim at HSF Korea office in Seoul. Ms. Kim (Keum Art Projects) has been living in Berlin for many years and has always been interested in issues regarding nature conservation and transboundary cooperation with a focus on the legacy of a divided Germany or the persistent division of Korea. One of her projects is called "DAS DRITTE LAND" (engl. The Third Country). Since 2019, the art garden created by various artists hosts fauna from North Korea and South Korea in the heart of Berlin.

You can find out more about the project here (German).
