Meetings in November 2023

In November 2023 there were several meetings and events related to Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSF) Korea. Environmental concerns, Korean reunification and cooperation with Central Asian Flyway (CAF) were the topics in this month.

The Shinan International Symposium on Migratory Birds, held on November 2, 2023, aimed to find solutions for the restoration and management of habitats for migratory waterbirds. Experts, decision-makers, and locals gathered annually since 2007 to discuss migratory birds and habitat conservation, with a focus on coastal wetlands. Notable discussions included international cases, the UK and East-Asian Australasian Flyway habitat protection, and the Korean government's tidal flat Getbeol restoration plan and challenges.

 

The Goose Bulletin, the official bulletin of the Goose Specialist Group, shared insights from Dr. Bernhard Seliger and Dr. Hyun-Ah Choi, members of the IUCN SSC Goose Specialist Group. They published the population trend of Geese in Gimpo, acknowledging support from Gimpo City and Birds Korea. The East Asian - Australasian Flyway Partnership (EAAFP) fosters collaboration among government, academia, and civil society for bird protection. Hanns Seidel Foundation, Korea, a member since 2016, hosted EAAFP representatives on November 8 to review past activities and discuss future cooperation.

On November 9, experts gathered for a symposium on climate change and the security crisis in the Korean Peninsula. Dr. Hyun-Ah Choi participated, emphasizing ecological approaches for cooperation. Additionally, a meeting with Hee-Eun Kim, President, and CEO of the Center for Asia Pacific Strategy, took place during her visit to South Korea.

On November 13, the Hanns Seidel Foundation delegation, including Dr. Max Meier and Mr. Javkhar Dustov, visited UNDP in Uzbekistan to discuss activities related to the Central Asian Flyway (CAF) and nature conservation. The delegation also met with GIZ and the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection, and Climate Change in Uzbekistan, gearing up for CMS COP 14.

The HSF delegation continued its activities in Uzbekistan on November 14, meeting with organizations to discuss future cooperation related to the CAF initiative and CMS COP 14. They visited Tuzkan/Aydarkul Lake, conducting a field survey to understand birds' habitat and ecosystem services.

Hanns Seidel Foundation Korea co-organized the Unification & Cultural Policy Forum on November 22, discussing a new understanding of unification. Dr. Bernhard Seliger presented insights into the present and future of North Korea, emphasizing potential cooperation. On November 23, Prof. Dr. Bernhard Seliger spoke at the 30th Anniversary of NEASPEC, sharing thoughts on achieving sustainable environmental cooperation.

 

Hanns Seidel Foundation Korea participated in the International Symposium for Conservation of Scaly-sided Mergansers on November 21-22. Experts discussed good practices, international cooperation for bird conservation, and biodiversity conservation in the climate crisis. The delegation emphasized the need for habitat restoration along the flyway.

The Global Dialogue on Korean Peninsula Unification, held on November 23, focused on internal cooperation for freedom, peace, and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula. Dr. Bernhard Seliger and Dr. Hyun-Ah Choi, representatives of HSF Korea, participated as speakers, sharing opinions on implementing the Audacious initiative and Green Détente. They assessed the environment for inter-Korean relations and discussed multilateral cooperation amid current risks and global security issues.
