Sea and Waterbird Survey in Goseong

From the 4th to 7th of December, HSF Korea conducted a survey of sea and waterbirds in Goseong together with Dr. Nial Moores, Director of BirdsKorea, Dr. Jeongmoon Ha, and Eojin Kim.

From 4-7 December 2023, Dr. Nial Moores, a director of BirdsKorea, Dr. Jeongmoon Ha, and Mr. Eojin Kim, together with Dr. Bernhard Seliger and Ms. Minjae Baek from HSF Korea conducted a 4-day survey of “marine preferential seabirds and waterbirds” in Goseong county, Republic of Korea. Especially during the migration season, thousands of sea birds migrate across the border of the two Koreas every day. The survey in border areas gives us information on their habitat conditions and on different bird species. Moving freely without the concept of borders, birds in the inter-Korean border region are a symbol of hope for reconciliation and peace.

The survey was complimented by the participation of the ‘새덕후 Korean Birder’, on whose YouTube Channel, a video can be expected soon. Also accompanying the survey on the 5th and 6th of December was Mr Adrian Gollner, a Canadian artist, who began his focus on drawing birds with a project in 2017 called “All the Birds I Saw Last Year”.

In total, from December 4th to 7th, between 21,386 and 38,848 birds were counted.
