Kim Young Soo on German reunification at Incheon Songcheon Elementary School

On 12 December, Kim Young Soo from the Hanns Seidel Foundation Korea gave a lecture on German reunification at the Songcheon Elementary School in Incheon. A ten-minute video gave a brief insight into the fall of the Berlin Wall as well as the subsequent efforts to adapt the old and the new federal states. The fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989 was one of the biggest and most important events not only for Germany, but also for the world, as it played a significant role in the development of the EU and international politics.

Presentation by Kim Young Soo about German reunification

Almost all students of the 6th class think that it would be nice for the two Korean countries to reunite. The war has not ceased on the Korean peninsula, since an armistice agreement was signed in 1953, but until now no peace treaty has been negotiated. The reunification would of course be a long process that is likely to be very expensive (German reunification cost several trillion euros), but to reunite families and friends and to integrate the Korean peninsula more closely into the international network - for example by rail connections from Korea to Russia or China – it would be a good investment.

Kim Young Soo was delighted at the very positive and inquisitive attitude of the young students about Korean reunification, and their knowledge of historical and political events in the world was also impressive.
