Bird Fair in Ulsan
International Cooperation through Birds

Many migratory birds fly across and land in different countries and thus build a connection between ecosystems in those countries. This connection and the protection of birds could be a great opportunity for cooperation between countries and local and international organizations. In this spirit, from 17th to 19th November 2017, the 8th Asian Bird Fair took place in Ulsan, South Korea.

The Asian Bird Fair was founded by six South East Asian organizations with the conservation of habitat and protection of birds in mind. This year, more than 80 organizations from more than 20 countries took part in the Fair, which took place next the Taewhagang River, were bird lovers can find thousands of rooks and jackdaws. The area is also habitat to many migratory birds and a bamboo forest.

The program of the fair consisted of an exhibition, in which international organizations could present their ideas and work in booths, and symposiums about migratory birds conservation and eco-tourism. Participants also had the possibility to join birdwatching tours.

Hanns Seidel Foundation Korea (HSF) was also present with a booth, in cooperation with Birds Korea and also introducing the East Asian Australian Flyway Partnership (EAAFP). Visitors could take a look at pictures of landscapes and birds from both South Korea and North Korea. Tensions on the Korean Peninsula are tightening, and cooperation on a political level seems almost impossible. Environment conservation, especially in wetlands and the border region, provide a suitable platform for cooperation and could help improving the Korean-Korean relationship. HSF also provided an insight in ongoing projects in North Korea and the border area that include environment protection.
