HSF Meeting with Partners

In February there was a lively exchange between the HSF and partners. New ways for a peaceful inner-Korean rapprochement were discussed, especially in the areas of wetlands, forestry and climate change.

New cooperation in prospect

On February 22, 2019, Mr. Kook-Hyun Moon, a driving force of the environmental movement, and experts from various related topics visited HSF Korea to discuss cooperation in the field of forestry and climate change. Mr. Moon is particularly committed to reforestation in Korea and spearheading the planting of tens of millions of trees across Asia. It was jointly agreed that all participants would think about cooperation possibilities and exchange ideas in the next step.

Imaginative meeting with the Global Green Growth Institute

On the same day, the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) visited Hanns Seidel Foundation Korea to discuss environmental cooperation on the Korean Peninsula. GGGI is an intergovernmental organization that supports developing countries transition to a model of economic growth that is environmentally sustainable. GGGI delivers programs in 26 partner countries and has global and country programs with technical support and capacity building. GGGI also has plans to examine the feasibility of 100% renewable energy for the Korean Peninsula. Dr. Bernhard Seliger (Resident Representative, HSF Korea) explained the work of HSF in the field of forestry, wetland biotopes and climate change on the Korean Peninsula. HSF Korea and GGGI have agreed to intensify their joint activities in the future.

Meeting with Mr. Chun Kwang-Geun

Another meeting took place with the Vice Mayor of Artyom (Russia), Mr. Chun Kwang-Geun. Artyom is the city where the airport of Vladivostok is located. Mr. Chun, of Korean origin, was particularly committed to the promotion of peaceful relations on the Korean peninsula and actively cooperates with one of the main partner of HSF Korea, the Institute for Peace Affairs (IPA). During the meeting, Dr. Shin Yong-Seok and Ms. Son Hyon-Soo of the IPA discussed ways to promote peace and cooperation on the Korean peninsula.

In exchange with Mrs. Hollenders and Dr. Christoph Hollenders

Furthermore, HSF met with Dr. Christoph Hollenders, Honorary Consul of the Republic of Korea in Saxony, and Mrs. Hollenders, to discuss projects of cultural and ecological cooperation between South and North Korea. Saxony with its capital Dresden has an impressive network of political, economic and cultural connections to South Korea and has long-standing relations with North Korea. People like Dr. Hollenders keep these relations alive and help to promote reconciliation on the Korean Peninsula.

During the board meeting Dr. Seliger reported about the projects of the HSF

Another meeting with Dr. Jaekyong Chun from the National Nature Trust took place in the office of HSF Korea. The National Nature Trust owns 10 so-called "trust sites" in South Korea and discussed with HSF Korea about possibilities to engage in North Korea.

On 25 February 2019, Dr Bernhard Seliger and Dr Hyun-Ah Choi participated in the 22nd board meeting organized by the Green Climate Fund (GCF). HSF was able to exchange experiences and strengthen cooperation with experts and interest groups.
