Han River Estuary Events in April

There were two events at the end of April regarding the Han River estuary, and one of them involved the participation of the Hanns Seidel Foundation.

On 30 April, Kimpo City hosted the Han River Estuary Opening Waterways for Peace Festival to commemorate the third anniversary of the 4.27 inter-Korean summit. Experts from various areas, including rivers, ecology, history, arts, and economy, participated in this festival, navigating 20 kilometers from the Han River estuary’s Jeollyu-ri port to neutral waters.

Kimpo expressed its yearning for unrestricted passage of the Han River, reunification, through this event and will aim to implement inter-Korean exchange projects in the near future.Kimpo expressed its yearning for unrestricted passage of the Han River, reunification, through this event and will aim to implement inter-Korean exchange projects in the near future.

On 30 April, several officials, researchers, and civil society representatives participated in a boat survey on the Han River estuary and its natural area as part of research into the sustainable and peaceful development.

Dr Hyun-Ah Choi, Senior researcher of HSF Korea was invited as an expert to this survey. While the Southern part of the Han River estuary, the Siamri Wetland, is the only accessible wetland due to the political situation of the border, HSF Korea intends to expand the scope of survey to include more wetlands in the future. After the survey, the participants shared their ideas for the next step and planned to organise a parallel session at the 2021 DMZ Forum in May.
