Global Border Studies

On March 18th, 2021 Chung-Ang University GSIS Leaders Forum and Reconciliation and Coexistence in Contact Zones (RCCZ) co-hosted a special seminar to celebrate the opening of the new Global Border Studies at Chung-Ang University. The Seminar took place at Da Vinci Classroom 703, Art Center, Building 301 of Chung-Ang University and was also lived streamed on Youtube for general participants to follow.

The seminar prominently discussed the future of border studies and inter-Korean relations. It started with a guest speaker session, which was moderated by Sun Eae Chun, the director of GSIS. Dr. Seliger of HSF Korea spoke about migratory birds and environmental conservation in the border region, highlighting that border studies should not focus only on the DMZ but on the border region as a whole.

Other speakers included Jaegang Lee, Deputy Governor for Peace in Gyeonggi Province, who presented the contributions of the provincial office to the border region. Kum-Sil Kang, Head of People for Earth emphasized the potential of the border region, adding an environmental angle to the discussion. She elaborated the concept of nature as principal agent, calling for humans to preserve the environment. Hae Jung Lee, Head of Reunification Economic Center of Contemporary Economy Research Institute focused on tourism and the significant role it can play in the development of inter-Korean relations.

A brief round table discussion followed, and it was moderated by Professor Yong Ku Cha. Speakers in general emphasized the development and nurturing of border research. Congratulatory messages and excitement towards the establishment of the new Global Borders Seminar filled the atmosphere as the session came to an end.
