Former Speaker of the National Assembly Chung Ui Hwa to become Advisor for HSF Korea

On November 10, 2016, the former Speaker of the National Assembly, Chung Ui Hwa, was appointed advisor for the Hanns Seidel Foundation Korea. Chung is going to support HSF in terms of reconciliation between North and South Korea. He is currently Chairman of Vision for New Korea, and aims to improve, together with the Hanns Seidel Foundation, the cooperation between North and South Korea regarding medicine and health care. An improved medical cooperation might also lead to a peaceful unification of both countries. Chung, who himself is a doctor, used to run a hospital in Busan prior to his political career.

During the meeting Dr. Seliger informed Chung about the work of HSF in North Korea, and the challenges, which occur in the field of medicine and health care, such as the insufficient supply of medical devices and medicine, insufficient nutrition, and bad water quality.

The current situation on the Korean peninsula is changing due to the tension in Northeast Asia, the political changes in the US, and the political crisis in South Korea. During the meeting, the participants agreed upon hosting a seminar next year, to discuss about the improvement of medical cooperation.

Lee Byong Chul, Director of the Institute for Peace and Cooperation, Prof. Dr. Kim Tack Whan of the Gwangju World Web Contents Festival Promotion Committee, and Kim Young Soo and Jasmin Erlacher of HSF Korea participated in the event as well.
