Forestry Training in China – Disaster Risk Reduction and International Cooperation

In June 2016 the 1st Training in China took place. Following the training in Mongolia, HSF initiated the training for foresters from DPR Korea and under the framework of the EU-funded project on sustainable reforestation, which is jointly carried out by HSF and DPRK Ministry of Land and Environmental Protection (MoLEP).

The first site to visit by the delegates was a company for environment products in Dongguan, Guangdong Province. The company specializes on manufacturing equipment that is used for natural cultivation in order to prevent erosion and landslides on deforested hillsides. Erosion and landslides are caused by deforestation and pose a great threat for people living in deforested areas. The members of the delegation gained knowledge on how to use and produce these products.

During a visit to the Beijing Forestry University, presentations on tree nurseries and pest control introduced participants to current scientific research on the issues. Contacts with the Asia Foundation that were established on the previous training in Mongolia were intensified during a visit in which delegates from MoLEP were introduced closer to the foundation’s projects on disaster risk management.  Of special interest delegates were excursions to model sites in Dongguan and Shenzhen that allowed them to extend their practical knowledge and to draw comparisons to previously visited sites in Mongolia.
