During the month of May, HSF Korea participated in various events, such as continued surveying of the Han River Estuary, a meeting between Dr. Seliger and the EAAFP, and a roundtable at the National Cancer Center.

 

HSF Korea regularly surveys the Han River Estuary - a protected wetland area, an EAAFP site, and an Important Bird & Biodiversity Area. In May, Gimpo International Cultural Foundation published a new video about the Han River Estuary, running from Jogang-ri to Yeogan-ri in the Gimpo area. Dr. Hyun-Ah Choi of HSF Korea gave some brief remarks about Yu-Do, an islet and the migratory birds of the estuary, especially the Black-faced spoonbill.

On May 24th, Hyeseon Do, Programme Officer of the East Asian - Australasian Flyway Partnership (EAAFP)  held a meeting with Dr. Seliger and other members of the HSF Korea office. Topics of discussion included the upcoming event on the ‘Development of a Joint Inventory of the Status of Migratory Birds in the West/Yellow Sea’, along with discussions about other cooperative activities planned for later this year.

The National Cancer Center (NCC) has organized the roundtable on peace and medical cooperation among Paju, Gimpo, and Goyang city to establish a cooperation network based on a community health survey in the border area this year. The officers from 3 cities participated in the roundtable and shared the idea for cooperation. Especially, Goyang city explained the project with Myongji Hospital. Goyang city and Myongji Hospital published COVID-19 Manual for inter-Korean medical cooperation. On May 26th, the 2nd roundtable took place at NCC and Dr. Hyun-Ah Choi, Senior researcher of HSF Korea participated as an invited speaker. She explained HSF Korea’s activity and suggested the direction to enhance medical cooperation under the COVID-19 situation.

On May 28th, the Gyeongnam Institute (GNI) and the Gyeongsangnamdo Ramsar Environmental Foundation hosted a forum. The event discussed North Korea's membership in the Ramsar Convention and how it is cooperating internationally to protect their wetlands and biodiversity. Dr. Hyun-ah Choi of the Hanns Seidel Foundation Korea took part in the forum as a speaker and gave updates on the progress North Korea has made in the aforementioned endeavor. Lastly, a potential pilot project to identify the similarities and differences between the wetlands of the two Koreas was discussed.
