Environment Strategy of North Korea and the Potential for International Cooperation – Joint Workshop with UNEP WCMC

In recent years, new policies and political emphasis supported the North Korean environmental sector. This development comes along with an increased interest in international cooperation. Within the framework of the project on sustainable reforestation by Hanns Seidel Foundation Korea and funded by the European Union, a joint workshop with UNEP WCMC (UN Environment - World Conservation Monitoring Centre) took place. It was part of a training in China.

The workshop served as a positive way to introduce North Korea´s efforts in the field of environmental conservation and its existing cooperation with HSF Korea to UN Environment/UNEP-WCMC.

The workshop was opened by Felix Glenk, Project Manager for DPR Korea of Hanns Seidel Foundation. After the introduction of the agenda and all participants, he gave a presentation about the work of Hanns Seidel Foundation in North Korea with a focus on environmental cooperation. Subsequently, a presentation was given by a representative of the Ministry of Land and Environment Protection of DPR Korea. Challenges regarding environment conservation as well as areas for potential international cooperation were introduced. Afterwards a discussion about the topics of the presentations explored potential cooperation in different fields related to the environment.

The second part of the workshop was led by Dr. Han Meng, China representative of UNEP WCMC. Han introduced the work of her organization and its China strategy. This introduction was followed by presentations on specific programmatic areas by UNEP WCMC. The presentations include:

• “Adapting to Climate Change” prepared by Dr. Valerie Kapos (Head of Programme) and Alana Williamson (Associate Programme Officer), Climate Change and Biodiversity Programme of UNEP-WCMC

• “Forest Protection, Restoration and Sustainable Management” prepared by Charlotte Hicks (Programme Officer), Climate Change and Biodiversity Programme of UNEP-WCMC

• “World Database on Protected Areas and data management” presented by Marine Deguignet (Programme Officer), Protected Areas Programme of UNEP WCMC, through a video presentation.

The workshop served as a positive way to introduce North Korea´s efforts in the field of environmental conservation and its existing cooperation with HSF Korea to UN Environment/UNEP-WCMC. This provided a good opportunity for the North Korean delegation to learn about the international case studies and experiences presented by UNEP-WCMC, which serves as the basis for considering future collaboration potential.
