Energy for Sustainable Development – Publication in North Korea released

Energy is a requirement and necessity for development. Green energy can contribute to a sustainable development. In many developing countries with a lack of energy a focus on the development of green energy could prevent mistakes committed by industrial nations in the past, when a rapid developed exploited natural resources and caused environmental problems. The Hanns Seidel Foundation Korea supported a publication in North Korea dealing with these issues and introducing energy for sustainable development.

The publication was developed by professors and senior researchers of the State Academy of Science in North Korea. It starts from the basic definition of energy, but mainly focuses on the renewable energy in biological sector. Chapters such as energy and economy, energy and environment, planning renewable energy system are included. 

 

In the second part the subject of sustainable development is introduced, followed by an explanation about its connection to society development and economy. In the last and main chapter, the relation between energy and environment is explained, with a focus on key environmental challenges, environmental impacts of energy and topics such as the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMA) and Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation (REDD+).

 

Hanns Seidel Foundation works in North Korea since 2003 and since several years with a focus on topics concerning the environment and international cooperation and exchange in this field. Between 2010 and 2014 HSF supported the registration of North Korean CDM-Projects at the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change). The support of publications has the goal to introduce international standards, conventions and regulations to the wider society.
