Hanns Seidel Foundation celebrates World Migratory Bird Day on October 8

The World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) is an annual global celebration raising awareness through campaigns highlighting the ecological importance of the conservation of migratory birds in face of threats to their natural habitats. The second Saturday of May and October every year people worldwide take action and hold public events like education programmes, exhibitions and bird-watching excursions to honor WMBD.

This day is also significant for Hanns Seidel Foundation Korea, as the protection of migratory birds is one of the long-standing core tasks the foundation is dedicated to.

Nature knows no man-made borders. This is evident when migratory birds cross the demilitarized zone between the two Koreas. Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSF) Korea promotes exchanges amongst representatives of international organizations and national governments and raises awareness on the importance of environmental protection. At the same time, HSS Korea supports training in DPRK and abroad, conferences, and practical environmental studies to improve the expertise of decision-makers.

Since 2005, HSF Korea works with regional partners for sustainable development in the inner Korean border area. From 2010 to 2015, a contribution was made to the Crane Restoration Project in Anbyon County, North Gangwon Province, DPRK. From 2014 on, the foundation conducts regular surveys in the Sonbong Migratiory Bird Reserve of Rason Special City, DPRK. Since 2015, HSF works on the conservation of wetslands and international cooperation through the East Asian Australasian Flyway Partnership, Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, and others. These projects are meant to contribute not only to better nature protection but also to more understanding and ultimately reconciliation on the Korean Peninsula.

For more information about the HSF Korea projects in biodiversity please have a look at the new flyer “Birds and Biodiversity on the Korean Peninsula”. You can find it in the category “Publications” on the HSF website.
