Cranes as Messengers of Peace

On July 31st, an online seminar regarding cranes in the demilitarized zone was held by EAAFP and the International Crane Foundation. The speakers were Dr. Joo Yunjeong, Seoul National University, Dr. Lee Kisup, Korea Waterbird Network in Korea, and panelist, Dr. Choi Hyun-ah, Hanns Seidel Foundation.

The East Asian-Australian Flyway Partnership (EAAFP) consists of 37 partners from 18 countries, including intergovernmental agencies, non-governmental organizations, international organizations and international private enterprises, with the aim to protect migratory waterbirds, their habitats and the people dependent upon them. Together with the International Crane Foundation, who provide knowledge, leadership, and inspiration to engage people in resolving threats to cranes and their diverse landscapes, they organized this Online Seminar regarding Cranes and People in the Korean Demilitarized Zone.

 

Dr Lee started the Seminar with a presentation about the importance of the cranes in the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) – especially, wetlands and agriculture area in Cheorwon - gun for the red-crowned cranes and white-napped cranes. Dr. Joo followed up with a presentation about the relationship between cranes and people in the DMZ. She discussed the recent changes in the military surrounding the area, which have influenced the lives of the local people. After Dr. Joo’s report, Dr. Choi gave short presentation about the cranes in DPRK and comments for the cooperation with partners in DPRK.
