The resurrection of East German Products, Rotkäppchen and Ampelmännchen Popularity Revived.

Dr. Bernhard Seliger’s periodical article, ’30 Years After German Reunification,’ was published in JoongAng Sunday. This month, he introduced new phenomena of Germany, where East German goods and culture are in the spotlight again, 30 years after German reunification. In particular, he explained this current situation as a way of social integration and said this is no longer serves as a fundamental cause of criticism of the different regimes. Dr. Seliger dreamed that the day would come soon when the Korean Peninsula is unified, enjoying ‘Daedong-River Beer’ in South Korea and having ‘Choco Pie’ in North Korea.

Shadow of the Border, Shelter of Wildlife.

The contribution article ‘Shadow of the Border, Shelter of Wildlife’ by Dr. Seliger has been published on the Hankyoreh 21 website ‘Border Humanities’ series. This article introduced the ways to preserve biodiversity in DMZ in Korea and the Green Belt project of Germany. Since nature does not know the boundaries set by humans, wildlife travels freely across the border. In the past, East Germany formed the Iron Curtain to monitor defectors, just as the DMZ on the Korean Peninsula does now. Both Iron Curtin and DMZ limits human activity. Therefore, after German Reunification, the space was still untouched, German environmentalists devised the Green Belt to protect the ecosystem. Dr.Seliger suggests Korean Peninsula should also work litter harder to protect the ecosystem not only in a designated area but also benefiting landowners, such as protecting the contract environment.
