In May 2019, a two-week training took place in Qinzhou and Pingdu for a group of North Korean specialists of cattle farms in Pyongan-Namdo.

The group was accompanied by a manager and a translator from the Korea Association for Economic and Technological Cooperation (KAETC). The group visited cattle farms in Qinzhou, Pingdu, and Qingdao and learned, among others, about animal health and hygiene, animal races and breeding, animal feed and modern ways to construct cattle farms. The farmers aim to make their farms a base of modern cattle farming not only for Pyongan-Namdo, but for all of North Korea.

In particular, given the current dire food situation in North Korea, a modernization of the farm sector, if rightly implemented, will make food shortages disappear. This needs, however, beside modern technology and knowledge also structural changes, in particular regarding incentives for farmers.

At the sidelines of their training, the delegation also participated in the conferences on rural sustainable development in Qinzhou and vocational training for sustainable rural development in Pingdu on occasion of the 30th anniversary of both projects. This allowed them to gain a greater insight in global pressing issues of rural development, an issue also very important in North Korea, where the rural-urban gap greatly increased in the past two decades.
