Planning workshop with German colleagues

Together with three German colleagues the HSF Korea held a planning workshop in the last week of April that included several meetings with business partners and other events.

The planning workshop started with a Welcome-dinner for Ms. Debora Tydecks-Zhou, head of the Northeast and Central Asia Department of the HSF in Munich, attended by Dr. Bernhard Seliger, representative of the HSF Korea, and Young-Soo Kim, project manager of the HSF Korea, as well as partners of the Institute for Peace Affairs. The next day Ms. Thydecks-Zhou, Dr. Seliger, and Mr. Kim discussed with the National Institute of Forest Science their cooperation regarding the reforestation of the Korean peninsula and the World Forestry Congress.

Further, they visited the Ojeong Resilience Institute of Korea University, where they learned more about the impact of climate change on moderate climates. For talks on current developments on the Korean peninsula, they met with the German Embassy and later with the German Chamber of Commerce to address specifically Korea's post-pandemic economic developments.

In addition, the three of them visited Goseong province. Back in 2018 and 2019, it was struck by massive wildfires, which is why the HSF Korea reforested one hectare of land last year. Moreover, the rich biodiversity in Goseong province was discussed. Thanks to its lakes and extensive landscapes larger numbers of birds migrate to the region. But animals living in the rice fields are endangered by the ongoing development of infrastructure. Later that day, the group visited the DMZ Museum.

On April 26, Dr. Seliger, Mr. Kim, and Ms. Tydecks-Zhou, alongside the deputy head of evaluation of HSF Munich, Mr. Maximilian Schmid, and project coordinator Northeast and Central Asia HSF Munich, Mr. Alexander Ganepola, attended the opening ceremony of the Cherwon inter-Korean Forest Cooperation Center. On the following day, a meeting took place with the Graduate School of Public Administration of Seoul National University as well as a visit to its museum.

The planning workshop ended on April 29 and helped with sharpening HSF Korea's profile. On the last evening, the employees of HSF Korea gathered for a farewell dinner with their colleagues from Germany.
