Annual meetings with Long-standing Partners in Songdo

Hanns Seidel Foundation (Korea) staff visited Songdo to meet with various partner organizations in order to discuss plans and prospects for continuing their prosperous cooperation in the new year.

EAAFP – Seabirds and Biodiversity

On March 21, Dr. Bernhard Seliger, Representative, Dr. Hyun-Ah Choi, Senior Researcher, and Ms. Anja Molek, Project Assistant, of HSF Korea visited the G-Tower in Songdo to meet with its close partners. The first meeting took place between HSF Korea and members of the EAAFP Secretariat. Recently, the Secretariat and Seabird Working Group of EAAFP have designated 2022 as the “Year of the Terns” to raise awareness about the diversity of tern species and to encourage dialogues on research and conservation within the East Asian-Australasian Flyway. Against this background, EAAFP and HSF Korea discussed ideas and possibilities for collaborative measures and events on the topic.

UNESCAP – Air pollution, Climate change, and Ocean Litter

Following the meeting with the EAAFP Secretariat, HSF Korea staff met Dr. Sangmin Nam, Deputy Director of the UNESCAP – East and North-East Asia Office (ENEA), to exchange views about current developments regarding green and sustainable development in the region. The North- East Asian Subregional Programme for Environmental Cooperation (NEASPEC) is part of the UNESCAP ENEA Office and works on topics such as nature conservation, transboundary air pollution, and marine protected areas in North-East Asia to strengthen collaborative efforts on environmental challenges. HSF Korea works diligently on the Korean peninsula to increase awareness about environmental problems and to promote climate action.

George Mason University Korea (GMUK) – Conflict Resolution and Peace

In 2021, HSF Korea and the Peace and Conflict Studies Center Asia (PACSC Asia) at GMUK collaborated on a project regarding “Cities and Zones of Peace.” They jointly organized a number of events, including problem-solving workshops for students and a wrap-up conference. Now the two organizations plan to expand their cooperation and build on the proceedings and results of last year’s work. Together with Prof. Roland Wilson, Co-Director of PACSC Asia, and Assistant Professor Hye Yun Kang, the future collaborative efforts and possible directions for the project were elaborated on.
