Waste cycle management, recycling, and the European Green Deal – Online Seminar

On August 17-18, 2022, Hanns Seidel Foundation’s third virtual lecture on Green Growth strategies was held with North Korea on sustainable waste management and renewable powers.

The seminar was held over two days and examined various strategies for sustainable and green growth. After the presentations, there was a discussion session where participants could ask their questions and exchange ideas about the presentation content.  On the first day of the seminar the topics of waste cycle management, the use of waste as raw material, and processes of professional waste disposal were treated. In his presentation, Dr. Feldmann, branch manager at REMONDIS Industrie Service, one of the largest waste management companies worldwide, outlined the development of waste management in Germany towards sustainable waste cycle management. Dr. Feldmann particularly emphasized the problems of increasing resource consumption and decreasing resources and the resulting need to use waste as a resource.

On the second day of the seminar, Prof. Miranda Schreurs, Chair of Environmental and Climate Policy at the Technical University of Munich, gave a presentation on circular economy and the European Green Deal approach. Prof. Schreurs outlined the importance of a circular economy as approximately 90% of biodiversity loss is due to resource extraction and processing. To this end, Prof. Schreurs presented the EU's Circular Economy Package 2022, which aims to put pressure on industry and especially on resource-intensive industries, such as textiles, construction, electronics, and plastics to aim for a sustainable production cycle. She also presented measures taken by major German cities to achieve climate neutrality, such as the expansion of bicycle paths and public transport networks or recycling mechanisms.
