8th International Conference on Global Citizenship Education

The 8th International Conference on Global Citizenship Education (ICoGCED) was held under the theme of “Transforming Learning for Critical Empowerment” in Seoul on 18-19 October 2023. Mr. Dominik Sprenger, a Chief representative, the HSF Zhejiang Office and Ms. Sanghyo Moon and Ms. Minjae Baek from the HSF Korea Office attended and participated in discussions on Global Citizenship Education (GCED).

On October 18-19, the 8th International Conference on Global Citizenship Education (GCED) Platform on Pedagogy and Practice with the theme "Unpacking GCED: Transformative Learning For Critical Empowerment". This was the first face-to-face meeting since the Covid pandemic.

GCED is not only about creating capable and outstanding citizens, but also about fostering citizens who broadly understand, think about, and practice universal human values such as world peace and cultural diversity. The conference brought together academics, government, and civil society officials from around the world involved in GCED to explore exemplary teaching methods and effective implementation methods, as well as to reflect on the current global crisis and discuss solutions.

 

Starting with the opening ceremony on the 18th, the Minister of Education and Sports of the Lao People's Democratic Republic, Mr. Phout Simmalavong, delivered a keynote speech, followed by presentations and discussions by global professors and experts on the topics of 'Multidimensional GCED in Response to Complex Crises' and 'Transformative Learning Capabilities for GCED Practice'.  On the 19th, plenary sessions were organized to share the best practices of GCED in each curriculum. Through this, the participants were introduced to GCED practices implemented in various fields, examples of integrated global citizenship education class design and implementation aimed at transformative learning, and various innovative teaching and learning methods and educational materials.

Mr. Dominik Sprenger, Head of HSF Zhejiang, and staff members from HSF Korea participated in the meeting and had a chance to envision the projects planned by HSF in Northeast Asia. The Zhejiang office of HSF is working on many projects for sustainable environmental education, including training schoolteachers to promote sustainable environmental education in schools.
