3rd International Forestry Seminar - National Forest Inventories in Mongolia and DPR Korea

After the successful 2nd international seminar early this year, HSF conducted the 3rd seminar on sustainable reforestation in DPR Korea in cooperation with its partners. HSF is supporting reforestation efforts in North Korea through its EU-funded project on the improvement of rural living conditions through sustainable forestry since 2014.

The topic of “National Forest Inventory” is vitally important to the DPR Korea. Previous data about the national forest stand show a 40 percent decrease between 1990 and 2015. Previous forest inventories lacked appropriate equipment and scientific method, therefore the modernization of the national forest inventory is a key aspect in the project. Participants from different sections of the forestry sector participated for a two-day workshop.  The event shall contribute to the establishment of an own NFI strategy in the DPRK.

The workshop was complemented by a one-day training session in Sangseo-ri, the model afforestation site within the EU project. The recurrent participation in the workshop and training by representatives of the North Korean forestry sector proves the sustainability of the project. Through the overall project the members of the forestry sector receive training by international experts and visit sites abroad to learn from best-practise examples. In the case of the topic of National Forest Inventory, the training was connected to a training on the same topic in Mongolia in June 2016.
