2022 Yellow Sea Peace Forum

On October 14, the 2022 Yellow Sea Peace Forum was held in Incheon to share the experience and knowledge of experts around the world and explore a model for implementing the Green Détente initiative through international cooperation.

With the inauguration of the new South Korean president and officials in Incheon through the 8th popular election in March 2022, a new Inter-Korean relationship needs to be established to bring sustainable peace to the Korean Peninsula. To actively respond to changes and play a leading role in the peacebuilding of the Korean Peninsula as a border maritime, Incheon Metropolitan City must assess the policy direction of Inter-Korean cooperation and shift the paradigm of its peace policy to promote the consensus on peace. The Ministry of Unification, Incheon council, EAAFP, RRC-EA, and Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSF) hosted this joint event to explore the need, direction, and tasks for Inter-Korean cooperation by utilizing elements of peace in the Han River Estuary and the Five West Sea Islands, the central areas for peace in the Korean Peninsula.

Dr. Bernhard Seliger, Resident Representative of HSF Korea, was invited as a speaker and took part in the 4th session that discussed the exploration of the feasibility of peacebuilding through Inter-Korean environmental cooperation in the maritime boundary areas near Incheon. Dr. Seliger presented the reason and importance of the work on wetlands and introduced the conservation and wise use of wetlands in DPRK. He gave a report on the capacity building and national wetland inventory and the Mundok Wetland Reserve Ramsar Site and its ecological importance. Dr. Seliger stressed that “international cooperation is key” but realistically there will not be direct cooperation anytime soon. He then made proposals based on the HSF experience such as joint research projects (e.g. GEF, GCF).
