From August 16 to 18, 2023, the 20th International Goose Specialist Group Meeting (GSG) of the IUCN Species Survival Commission took place in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. In collaboration with the Wildlife Science and Conservation Center of Mongolia and supported by the Hanns Seidel Foundation, researchers and experts gathered to discuss the protection of Nordic migratory birds.

The aim of the meeting was to strengthen the exchange among researchers focusing on migratory birds in the northern hemisphere. Dr. Bernhard Seliger of HSF Korea made a notable contribution, presenting research findings on the protection of North Korean geese. Based on surveys conducted since 2014, he emphasized the threats to these populations and proposed protective measures.

The meeting provided a platform for knowledge exchange, the initiation of collaborations, and the discussion of proven conservation practices. Beyond scientific exchange, it also facilitated networking and collaboration among conservationists, governments, and other interest groups. The significance of the meeting lies in the presented insights and the reinforcement of the global community of professionals in migratory bird conservation. Collaboration remains crucial for ensuring the long-term preservation of these fascinating bird species.
