Celebrating World Wetlands Day 2025: HSF Korea’s wetland conservation activities
Wetlands are disappearing at an alarming rate. According to the Convention on Wetlands Secretariat, nearly 90% of the world’s wetlands have been degraded since the 1700s, and today, we are losing wetlands three times faster than forests. This loss has dire consequences for biodiversity, climate mitigation and adaptation, freshwater availability, and global economies.
Despite their immense value, wetlands often remain undervalued and overlooked. World Wetlands Day provides a platform to raise awareness and deepen the understanding of these vital ecosystems. It is a call to action for governments, organizations, and individuals to prioritize conservation and restoration efforts.
HSF Korea is deeply committed to advancing wetland conservation and restoration as part of its broader mission to promote sustainable development. By working with local communities and international partners, HSF Korea actively contributes to reversing the trend of wetland loss.
Exemplary activities of the HSF Korea in 2024 were for one in August, where the HSF was represented by Prof. Dr. Seliger and researcher Dr. Hyunah Choi at the Expert Work Session for the Biosphere Reserve Wetlands Nature Centre, held in Jeongok, Yeoncheon. This symposium marks a significant stride towards integrating sustainable practices into urban development.
